I hope you enjoy reading this, it took me a long time to make. If you are trying to "Hack" into an account, try FIELD/SERVICE or SYSTEM/MANAGER. If your lucky, the admin hasn't changed the passwords for these two accounts yet. When you first connect to a VMS system, you will get something like this:
Username: FIELD
Password:
Welcome to RHH ... VAX/VMS Version 5.04
Last Interactive login on Monday, 6-AUG-1990 17:45
$
The ($) Sign is the DCL prompt or the DIGITAL COMMAND LANGUAGE prompt.
Be aware that you should ALWAYS check the users on a VAX system before you do anything else. The system manager could be logged on, which means he can virtually (if he notices you) watch your screen from his terminal. If you see him/her logged on, you can type LO/HANGUP to immediately log off of the VMS system.

$SH USERS
(This command can also be typed as "SH U")

Total number of interactive users = 1
Username Process Name PID TERMINAL
RIFT RIFT 000000AF VTA89:
This means the coast is clear. Since the system manager isnt logged on, you are free to do anything you want.
Changing Passwords
Changing your password is not recommended if your logged in as Field or any other stolen account. However, if you have an account on a VMS system, this is very useful.
$ SET PASSWORD:
$ OLD PASSWORD: Old
$ NEW PASSWORD: New
Minimum Password length is usually 8 characters. If you enter an invalid password, you will get an error, so then just make it more than 8 characters and you'll be OK. If you want to have the VMS system create an 8-character password for you, simply type at the DCL Prompt:
$SET PASS/GENERATE=8
rrietdgf eirhgntr
eightner eiagetsd
yeurhgtu eirhtngh
euryfgds tidjsgte
Then chose a password from the above list
